Armand, a 6-year-old boy, is accused of assaulting his best friend in elementary school.
The debut feature film of Halvdan Ullman Tønder, the grandson of Ingmar Bergman and Liv Ullman, is a partly allegorical, partly naturalistic analysis of the systems of education and training of the XXI century, as well as their relationship to " an accident”; between two 6-year-old boys
Renata Reinsvet is the eccentric mother of Armand, the alleged culprit of the incident, and since she is closely watched by her son’s teacher, the school administration and the parents of the second boy, the film slowly descends into the abyss of relations, into a state of limbo.
from which it will never come out, nothing good will come out of it
Ulman Tønder’s purpose and stance is strong, as is his artistic expression, which is clearly inspired by the work of his grandfather and perhaps to some extent by Kubrick.
And although the narrative as such feels uneven at times, and the film is unevenly edited, “Arman” is in many ways a return and a tribute to pure cinema, for which it should be applauded
