Maurice and Katya Kraft devoted their lives to the study of volcanoes around the world. Their legacy consists of groundbreaking footage of eruptions and their aftermath, compiled into this visually stunning collage.. The footage of exploding volcanoes is quite extraordinary, the accompanying soundtrack suitably haunting, this documentary also shows how devastating exploding volcanoes can be to human beings, animals & the countryside that lay in their paths. You just have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also, Werner Herzog’s narrative is magnificent in its wonder, tenderness and almost reverence for the power of nature – & his admiration for the Kraft couple is quite evident. You’re left feeling really sorry that they were killed in an eruption in Japan, because their archive seems unfinished, while their legacy lives on.
